In Ondo, six northerners shot to death.

In Ondo, six northerners shot and killed.

The victims were laid to rest on Wednesday, while one of the survivors was still being treated at an undisclosed hospital in the state.

The attack occurred as the state continues to mourn the deaths of over 40 worshippers at St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, in Ondo State's Owo LGA, on Sunday.

Alhaji Abdulsalam Yusuf, the Sarkin Hausawa of Ondo, told Daily Trust that the gunmen arrived on motorbikes around 12:30 a.m. and opened fire on innocent roadside petty traders.

"They arrived in our neighbourhood (Sabo) on motorcycles, each with three gunmen." They began shooting people, mostly suya and tea vendors, all of a sudden.

"The first victim was a J5 bus driver who was on his way to work and stopped to eat. They assassinated a guard and a shopkeeper who was attempting to lock up his shop and flee the assailants.

"They gunned down two young men eating noodles at a mai shayi stall once more. This brings the total number of victims in Sabo to five.

"They struck again, this time in Iba, where they also killed another man," he added.

Yusuf said he alerted the local divisional police officer, who sent a patrol team to the scene to assess the situation and transport the bodies to a mortuary, while survivors were taken to a hospital.

Yusuf speculated that the attack was a retaliation because they had lived in the area peacefully for more than 60 years prior to the Sunday attack on worshippers.

Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Sarkin Hausawa of Shasha in Akure, told Daily Trust that the Hausa community had no involvement in the Owo attack.

"We have lived peacefully with the people of Ondo State for a long time; we have no issues with them." What will lead us to attack them or their church if we are doing our businesses together?

He stated, "We want them to know that our people had nothing to do with the church attack."
