How FBI Agent Stephen P. Shaw’s Training Mission Ended in Tragedy Off Virginia Beach
Stephen P. Shaw, an FBI Special Agent born in July 1972 in Santa Paula, California, was remembered for a career shaped by hard work, discipline and a desire to take on difficult assignments. He joined the FBI in August 2005 and later became part of the Bureau’s Hostage Rescue Team, one of its most demanding units.
His life changed on May 17, 2013, during a helicopter-based maritime counterterrorism training exercise off the Atlantic coast near Virginia Beach, Virginia. Shaw and his training partner, Special Agent Christopher Lorek, were taking part in a fast-roping drill when the helicopter developed in-flight difficulties. Both agents were thrown from the rope into the water and later died after being taken to a nearby hospital.
In a family remembrance, those close to him described a man who embraced tough work and placed duty above comfort. His mother said he would choose the hardest task, while his family summed up his priorities with the phrase, “Family first, mission always.”
