JUST IN: Tinubu Picks Tegbe for Power Minister Role After Shock Exit — What It Means for Nigeria’s Electricity Sector

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as the new Minister of Power, sending his name to the Senate for screening and confirmation.

The decision was disclosed on Thursday in a State House communication, coming shortly after the resignation of former minister Adebayo Adelabu.

The presidency said the nomination follows due constitutional process, with the Senate expected to review and decide on the appointment in the coming days.

This marks a fresh shift in Nigeria’s power leadership at a time when the sector continues to face pressure over electricity supply and reforms.

Mr. Tegbe, a former executive in the private sector, is stepping into the spotlight as expectations rise for improved performance across the power value chain.

A presidential aide, in a brief statement, confirmed the move, noting: “The nomination has been transmitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation in accordance with the Constitution.”

The development comes days after Adelabu stepped down from office to pursue political ambitions, creating a vacancy in one of the country’s most critical ministries.

Industry observers have repeatedly stressed the need for a technocrat with deep expertise to tackle long-standing issues in Nigeria’s electricity sector, including generation shortfalls and distribution challenges.

With the nomination now public, attention shifts to the Senate, where lawmakers will determine whether Tegbe takes charge of the power ministry at a crucial moment for Nigeria’s energy future.
