The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered the dismissal and criminal prosecution of officers involved in a fatal shooting in Effurun, Delta State, in a move that signals a firm response to public outrage.
The decision follows the killing of a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, during an incident on April 26, 2026, which sparked widespread concern after details emerged online.
Speaking at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the police chief described the act as a serious breach of professional conduct and existing rules on the use of firearms. He said the officers’ actions did not reflect the values of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The action was criminal, unprofessional, and has no place in the Force,” Disu said during the briefing.
Investigations carried out by the Force Disciplinary Committee found that the officer at the centre of the incident, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman, violated established procedures. The panel recommended his dismissal alongside other officers linked to the case.
According to the police, all affected officers have been transferred to Abuja, where internal disciplinary processes were concluded. The recommendations have now been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final approval.
The IGP further stated that once the dismissal is confirmed, the officers will be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities to face prosecution for unlawful homicide.
Reinforcing the Force’s stance, Disu warned that abuse of power would not be tolerated. “No uniform confers the right to take life outside the law,” he added.
The incident, captured in a viral video, showed the victim restrained before the shooting, intensifying public scrutiny and calls for accountability.
Authorities say the action taken is part of ongoing efforts to enforce discipline and rebuild public trust in policing across Nigeria.
