This was revealed to the News Agency of Nigeria in Minna, the state capital, by Salihu Garba, the director general of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency.
He stated that a report of the boat incident that happened on October 2, 2023, between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State was received by the agency.
He claimed that a witness to the incident stated that there were roughly 22 people on board the boat.
According to him, local boat owners and divers were still conducting search and rescue operations under the direction of the agency's desk officer in Agwara.
He added that the incident occurred on the day of the Yauri market and that no passenger has yet been located.
Families wouldn't be allowed to declare their missing relatives until after the market, Garba continued.
According to him, it takes a drowned individual around 24 hours to come to the surface of the water.
He said that water hyacinth and powerful waves were what caused the catastrophe.
Alhaji Bala Mohammed, the chairman of the Yauri local government council, who verified the tragedy to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi, stated that the boat, which was transporting 50 persons and their luggage.
He said that the Niger River's waves caused the boat to capsize, and that only 10 passengers were saved while the remaining 40 perished along with the boat.
