According to sources, Nigerian lawmakers are getting ready to introduce a bill that will regulate false information on social media.
In reaction to online claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had obtained a fake degree from Chicago State University (CSU), Comrade Chinedu Ogah, the Ebonyi State representative for the Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency, made this disclosure.
Ogag projected that the National Assembly will soon approve the proposal and then sign it into law, limiting the spread of false material on social media in Nigeria.
Bendelnews has learned that Ogah made this statement to the media over the weekend in the capital of Ebonyi state, Abakiliki.
"We will soon pass a bill against fake news in the National Assembly, effectively to regulate social media like it is done in other nations. Thus, whatever people write or say will be subject to regulation. You don't just post whatever comes to mind while sitting in your room.
"And from my perspective, those who are demanding for President Tinubu's resignation are doing it out of malice. No facts exist for them. They take as gospel anything they read on social media. Nigeria has laws, and our people are bound by a constitution, the legislator stated.
Recall that Tinubu's identification as the election's winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is being contested by Atiku Abubakar, a candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election.
Atiku stated that Tinubu had submitted a fake copy of his CSU certificate to INEC in order to be eligible for the 2023 elections in his petitions.
