After the final whistle, North Korea's captain Jang Kuk Chol and teammate Kim Kyong Sok argued angrily with referee Rustam Lutfullin, pursuing the Uzbek in the centre of the pitch as he attempted to retreat before interfering.

The North Korean goalie Kang Juh Yok ran out and accidentally clipped the feet of Japan's Jun Nishikawa with an outstretched arm, prompting Uzbek referee Rustam Lutfullin to award a penalty to Japan.

Japan advanced to the semifinals after Yuta Matsumura converted the penalty.
