On Friday, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and his colleague from the United States, Kamala Harris, met at the White House in Washington, D.C. to discuss issues of common interest between the two nations.
Osinbajo, speaking about the meeting, stated that both countries must continue to work together on a bilateral and multilateral level in order to address common global challenges, promote peace and security, and take on issues such as pandemics, climate change, and economic hardship. In addition to that, he lauded the Inflation Reduction Act of the United States.
"It was truly an honor to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris to discuss Nigeria's Energy Transition Plan and other interests between our governments," said the Vice President of the United States.
"In addition to a shared commitment to democracy, it is imperative that both countries continue to collaborate at the bilateral and multilateral levels in order to address common global challenges, promote peace and security, and take on issues such as pandemics, climate change, and economic hardship. I appreciate your kind hospitality during my visit to the White House.
Vice President Harris stated in her speech that the leadership of Africa, and in particular the leadership of Nigeria, was essential to addressing local, national, and international issues.
She continued by saying, "It was a pleasure to meet with Nigeria's Vice President Osinbajo today to explore ways in which the United States and Nigeria can work together to deepen our partnership."
She praised Nigeria's Energy Transition Plan (ETP), which is being led by Osinbajo, and said, "I have no doubt that they (ETP goals) would be achieved," Harris said.
"When we look at the issue of the climate crisis, Mr. Vice President, you have been an eternal leader on this issue," she said in recognition of his ongoing global advocacy for a just energy transition towards the net-zero emissions target of 2060.
The United States announced its "new vision" for Sub-Saharan Africa at the beginning of the previous month, which prompted the bilateral meeting to take place within the ceremonial office of the Vice President.
