A fruit picker is accused of murder after he sawed off his friend's leg with a circular saw

In north-eastern Australia, a man has been charged with murder after reportedly chopping another guy's leg off.

After being spotted by passers-by on Fitzgerald Esplanade in Innisfail, a 66-year-old Innisfail man died in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The man's leg was amputated using a circular saw, according to police, after he paid a fruitpicker acquaintance, John Yalu, 36, hundreds of dollars to perform the amateur operation.

According to investigators, the two individuals knew each other.

The men allegedly drove to the park together, then the 36-year-old guy allegedly hacked the other's leg off below the knee with a circular saw 20 minutes later, according to police.

The suspect then walked away from the scene, assisting the injured man back to his car.

A bystander discovered the injured guy and phoned for help, but the 66-year-old died shortly after.

Cairns police Detective Inspector Gary Hunter said the amputation was likely the result of a prior agreement between the two males.

The 36-year-old was given $5,000 by the deceased guy to perform the amputation, according to police.

'Police will allege that the deceased and another male person arrived at a location on Fitzgerald Esplanade at Innisfail at 3.48 a.m. on Saturday,' Det Insp Hunter said.

'They both got out of the car and proceeded to a nearby grassy area, where they stayed for around 20 minutes.

'After that, a male began sawing the deceased person's leg off using a circular saw.'

'A short time later, the guy in this case assisted the deceased person, who is 66 years old, in returning to the vehicle, and then departed the area on foot.'

'Police will claim that these two guys were acquainted.'

The deceased man's battery-powered saw is thought to have been utilised in the event.
