State Services Police Seal Off Kano Press Centre Over Northern Groups Protest

The Department of Security Service (DSS), the Nigerian police, and other security services blocked off the Nigeria Union of Journalists' Kano State secretariat on Wednesday (Press Centre).

This occurred following the Coalition of Northern Groups' announcement of its intention to use the Press Centre as the site of a peaceful protest against the country's deteriorating security situations.

According to Daily Trust, the protest's organisers invited the public via social media.

The demonstration, however, was unsuccessful because security vehicles manned by fully armed people were stationed and distributed across the street, while the press centre's gate was closed.

Barrister Abba Hikima, one of the conveners, stated in front of the centre, "The purpose of this parade is to express our outrage over the events and the way things are heading in this country in terms of security."

Everyone in this country, regardless of origin, is aware of the nature of insecurity in Nigeria, and people are aware that nobody is sleeping with their two eyes closed right now, and nobody is doing anything about it.

That is why we are here to remind this government that we, the electorates, are the ones who send them there. They are ostensibly our servants." Nigeria's constitution vests its citizens with sovereignty.

It is ours, not the leaders'. They should recognise their duties and take action; else, we will continue to protest here indefinitely until they take action."

We are not required to write to the police or anyone else before coming out to demonstrate. This is a judicial ruling, and this is a violation of section 39 of the Nigerian Constitution."

Abbas Ibrahim, the Kano State chairman of the NUJ, responded to the development, saying, "What we know is that a group called Coalition of Northern Groups alerted us of a press briefing they intended to hold at the Press Centre.

However, when it was brought to our attention in the late hours of yesterday, we rejected permission and urged them to utilise another location. We have not granted anyone permission to come here and initiate a protest."
