African football officials are discussing the possibility of cancelling the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations owing to the Omicron Covid-19 strain.

According to reports, the Confederation of African Football [CAF] is in talks to cancel the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] tournament in Cameroon next month.

For a tournament that begins on January 9 and ends on February 6, a number of high-profile Premier League players are expected to quit their clubs in order to participate in the Cameroon tournament.

In the wake of the Omicron Covid-19 variation, African football officials are holding discussions about the cancellation of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations.

As the Omicron strain continues to spread over Central Africa, the Central African Federation (CAF) may announce a postponement.

Final preparation reports were unveiled at a meeting between CAF and tournament organisers on October 31. In order to ensure the safety of the competition, the committee stated that 'immediate care' was required.

"Sanitary problems" connected to the coronavirus pandemic and the admission of Cameroon fans into venues needed immediate care. This committee signed off on AFCON and Cameroon's Organizing Agreement, which said that the tournament will go forward as planned despite the controversy.

As if that weren't bad enough, the tournament may not even go ahead, which will be good news for Liverpool, who will miss the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, two of their best attacking players, should it be staged.
