Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, says that some roads in the country will be charged to pay back the money that was used to build them. This way, the money will be paid back.
He said this after a two-day meeting of the Bankers' Committee in Lagos on Wednesday, December 15. He also said that paying for roads will help keep them in good condition.
Then, he said;
Roads will be charged for in most of these places, and we know that in many other places, roads are charged for because those projects make money.
With tolls, they can be reimbursed for their work so that it can be done on a regular basis. People will pay for it and enjoy good roads and good facilities because that is the only way we can pay for the infrastructure of this country, which is what we need to do.
Also, he said that there are a lot of funds that could be used for the project if they were packaged the way the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria Limited was set up to make it easier for local investors to put their money into the project. He said that most of the funds would be in naira because the banks and pension fund administrators have a lot of money, and most of the funds can be raised locally before the country thinks about getting international financing.
