The deadly shooting occurred on Tuesday night in KwaMakhutha township, about 30 kilometres south of Durban, on South Africa’s east coast.
According to police, the victims had gathered at a house for a party when the attackers entered the premises and began shooting.
A woman believed to be pregnant was among those killed, while three other people sustained gunshot injuries and were taken for medical treatment.
Police said the suspects fled the scene after the attack and remained at large as of Wednesday, with investigations and a search operation underway.
The motive for the shooting has not been established.
However, police said some of the people who were at the house were known to them in connection with investigations into criminal activities.
Police also said they could not provide further details about those investigations, but noted that a feud between rival groups could not be ruled out as a possible motive.
The attack adds to a series of mass shootings that have occurred in South Africa in recent years.
In June, multiple gunmen reportedly killed 12 people in a poor neighbourhood in Johannesburg in another deadly shooting.
South Africa continues to face serious challenges with violent crime and gun-related killings, with the country recording one of the highest murder rates in the world.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation into the KwaMakhutha shooting continues.
