NGX: Nigeria’s Biggest Stocks Surge Ahead of Earnings as NGX Hits Record High

Nigeria’s stock market has continued its remarkable 2026 rally, with share prices of some of the country’s largest listed companies rising significantly faster than their latest earnings growth, according to Nairametrics.

The development is raising a key question for investors: how much of the optimism surrounding Nigerian equities has already been reflected in current share prices?

The backdrop has been an exceptional year for the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), with the market reaching new milestones as investors continue to show strong appetite for major listed companies.Read original

NGX All-Share Index crosses 250,000 points

According to the report, the NGX All-Share Index gained about 61% year-to-date as of September 21, pushing the benchmark index above the 250,000-point level.

The upward movement continued in the following days.

On September 23, the index closed at a record 251,191.02 points, representing another major milestone for the Nigerian equities market.

At the same time, the total market capitalisation of the NGX climbed to an all-time high of approximately ₦163.06 trillion.

The figures highlight the scale of the rally that has taken place across the Nigerian stock market this year.

Share prices rising faster than earnings

While rising share prices can reflect stronger investor confidence and expectations of future growth, Nairametrics noted that the latest performance of some of Nigeria’s largest listed companies has moved ahead of their earnings growth.

This creates a gap between how much companies are currently earning and how much investors are willing to pay for their shares.

In simple terms, a company's share price can rise because investors expect its profits to increase in the future. However, when the share price rises much faster than earnings, investors may be paying a higher valuation based on expectations of future performance.

That does not automatically mean that the shares are overpriced. It means that stronger future earnings may already be required to justify some of the current valuations.

Why investors are watching valuations

The sharp rise in Nigerian equities has increased the importance of valuation metrics such as price-to-earnings ratios, earnings growth and dividend yields.

Investors looking at stocks that have experienced substantial gains may therefore want to consider whether the companies' underlying financial performance has kept pace with their market valuations.

If earnings continue to grow strongly, elevated share prices could potentially be supported by improved profitability.

However, if earnings growth slows while valuations remain high, the gap between market expectations and actual financial performance could become more significant.

Nigeria’s stock market reaches new heights

The latest market records underline the strong momentum that has characterised Nigerian equities in 2026.

The NGX's rise above 250,000 points and the increase in total market capitalisation to ₦163.06 trillion represent significant milestones for the exchange.

For investors, however, the key issue is no longer simply how far share prices have risen.

The more important question is whether future earnings and business growth can justify the prices investors are currently paying for some of Nigeria's biggest listed companies.

As the market continues to reach new highs, corporate earnings, valuations and future profit expectations are likely to remain important factors for investors monitoring the next phase of the NGX rally.
