Messi's Argentina Achievements
Messi's biggest international triumph came at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, when he finally lifted the trophy with Argentina after years of near misses.
He also helped Argentina win two Copa América titles. The legendary forward was previously a World Cup runner-up in 2014 and finished second again at the 2026 tournament after Argentina's defeat to Spain in the final in July.
In announcing his decision, Messi admitted that ending his international career was an emotional and painful choice.
“It was a decision that hurt – and still hurts deep down – but I understand that the time has come.”
The Inter Miami star said he had always given everything for Argentina, including during the difficult years before the team's recent run of success.
He said representing the country had always been about fighting for the jersey, bringing happiness to supporters and making Argentines proud through football.
Messi Opens Up About Final World Cup
Messi also revealed that his decision was influenced by personal and physical challenges.
Following the death of his father, Jorge, earlier this month, the Argentine captain said he had serious doubts about how much longer he would continue playing for the national team.
He also spoke about the physical difficulties he experienced during Argentina's World Cup final against Spain in July.
“My legs could no longer continue,” Messi said, explaining that he tried to push himself beyond his physical limits but could not continue at the required level.
Messi said he believes the emergence of a new generation of talented Argentine players also makes the timing right for him to step aside and allow them to take their opportunity.
Future With Inter Miami
Although his international career has come to an end, Messi will continue his club career with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
The Argentine superstar remains under contract with the American club until 2028.
