2027: Will He or Won't He? Goodluck Jonathan Breaks Silence After Closed-Door Meeting With PDP Leaders

The political atmosphere in Abuja reached a fever pitch on Thursday as former President Goodluck Jonathan held a high-profile meeting with the interim leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The meeting, which took place behind closed doors, comes amid intensifying calls for the Otuoke-born statesman to enter the 2027 presidential race. For months, posters and support groups have flooded the streets, yet Jonathan has remained largely enigmatic about his intentions.

However, the presence of top party brass at his residence suggests that the "peace-maker" of Nigerian politics may be preparing for a more active role in the upcoming electoral cycle.

While his critics argue that the political landscape has shifted significantly since he left office in 2015, his supporters point to a growing nostalgia for the economic stability of his era. The PDP, currently navigating its own internal leadership hurdles, appears to be looking toward Jonathan as a potential unifying force to bridge factional divides.

Addressing the group and the gathered media briefly after the session, the former President maintained a cautious but open-ended posture.

"The presidential race is not a computer game; it is a serious national service that requires deep thought. I have heard the calls and the appeals from various quarters, but I will consult widely before making any definitive statement. Nigeria’s peace and stability must always come first.

Analysts suggest that a Jonathan candidacy would fundamentally disrupt the current political projections for both the ruling APC and the opposition Labour Party. With the 2027 polls still a distance away, this meeting serves as the strongest signal yet that the former President’s name will be central to the conversation.
