Train Derailment on Abuja–Kaduna Rail Line Linked to Mechanical Fault, NRC Confirms
Passengers on the busy Abuja–Kaduna Railway were left stranded on Monday after a train derailment forced the suspension of services, with authorities later confirming that a mechanical fault triggered the incident.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) said preliminary findings indicate that a mechanical failure in one of the train coaches caused several carriages to leave the tracks near Jere while the train was heading toward Abuja.
In a statement, NRC Managing Director Fidet Okhiria explained that early investigations point to a technical problem within the train’s rolling stock. The derailment forced an immediate halt to the service, leaving many passengers temporarily stranded at Rigasa Station.
Fortunately, no deaths were recorded. However, several passengers sustained minor injuries during the incident and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Railway officials confirmed that all affected passengers received medical attention and support.
The Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor is one of Nigeria’s most heavily used rail routes, linking the federal capital with northern commercial centers. Many commuters prefer the train due to security concerns on the highway connecting the two cities.
Monday’s derailment has therefore raised fresh concerns about rail safety and maintenance standards. The NRC has assured the public that passenger safety remains its top priority and that a comprehensive review of maintenance procedures for train coaches is already underway.
Rail operations along the corridor have been temporarily suspended as engineers work to clear the tracks and conduct safety inspections. Authorities say services are expected to resume once all safety certifications are completed in the coming days.
For many commuters who rely on the route daily, attention will now turn to how quickly repairs are completed and what new measures the railway corporation introduces to prevent similar incidents in the future.
