According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Russian General Staff’s Operational Training Department, died from injuries sustained in the blast. The explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street, where investigators believe an explosive device had been planted under the vehicle and remotely detonated.
The Investigative Committee said a criminal case has been opened and forensic and security agencies are conducting ongoing investigations at the scene. Authorities added that several possible motives and perpetrators are being examined, including the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services.
Ukrainian officials have not responded to the allegation.
The incident marks one of the most high-profile targeted attacks on a senior Russian military figure in Moscow in recent months, as tensions linked to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continue.
