With this approval, Imo State now boasts eight federal and state-owned universities, bringing the total number of state universities in Nigeria to 70.
Governor Hope Uzodimma received the approval letter from the NUC’s Executive Secretary, Abdullahi Ribadu, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
NUC Praises Imo’s Educational Vision
Presenting the approval, Ribadu praised the state government for its forward-thinking approach and commitment to academic excellence.
“The university should be built on standards — with quality research, the expansion of knowledge, and active engagement with industry and society,” Ribadu said.
He urged the institution to maintain high academic standards, focus on cutting-edge research, and provide innovative, student-driven programmes that will produce graduates equipped to make meaningful contributions in their communities and workplaces.
According to the NUC, the recognition takes effect immediately, paving the way for the university to commence full academic activities once its administrative and academic frameworks are set up.
Governor Uzodimma: Education for Innovation and Job Creation
Governor Uzodimma described the approval as a significant milestone in his administration’s educational agenda to equip young Nigerians with digital, innovative, and entrepreneurial skills for the future.
“This university will serve as a hub for innovation and job creation,” the governor said. “Our goal is to produce graduates who are not just employable but capable of creating opportunities for others.”
He revealed that the university will partner with international institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley, to foster collaboration, mentorship, and global research exchange programs.
A Boost for Science, Technology, and Research in Nigeria
Experts say the establishment of the University of Innovation, Science and Technology positions Imo State as a key player in Nigeria’s drive toward a knowledge-based and technology-driven economy.
The new university is expected to focus on fields such as engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and entrepreneurship, aligning its curriculum with the changing demands of the global workforce.
