The two were shot at a well-known Roman tourist destination in the Mediterranean city on Sunday morning, along with a local guide, who was killed.

The incident near the site of Pompey's Pillar left another person injured, according to a statement from Egypt's interior ministry. It didn't offer any more information.

The wounded Israeli had moderate injuries, according to the Israeli Foreign Ministry. Israeli officials were collaborating with the Egyptian government, according to a statement from the ministry, to return the Israelis to their country.

The accused attacker was reportedly taken into custody, according to the Egyptian security services-affiliated Extra News television channel.

Egyptian sources who spoke with Reuters claim that the policeman claimed he was agitated and lost control before randomly opening fire on the tourist group.

After Hamas launched an unexpected attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, murdering hundreds of people and kidnapping dozens more, there have been rising tensions throughout the area.

Following the commencement of violence, the chief of Egyptian intelligence was in constant touch with representatives from Israel and Hamas, according to three security sources on Saturday.

Egypt has long been involved in mediating the Israeli-Palestinian dispute after making peace with Israel decades ago. But there is a lot of anti-Israeli attitude in the nation, especially when there is conflict.

In a day-long event in June, close to the border between the two countries, three Israeli soldiers and one Egyptian security guard perished.

According to the latest incident, Alexandria lost two persons, according to Israel's Zaka rescue service.

In a statement, Israel's Foreign Ministry said: "This morning, while a group of Israeli tourists was visiting Alexandria, Egypt, a local opened fire on them, killing two Israeli citizens and the local Egyptian guide."

In addition, it stated that an Israeli soldier was hurt and was in fair condition.

Unsettling video posted online shows the remains of three persons lying on a staircase near Pompey's Pillar while an injured guy is being treated by bystanders.

Onlookers could be seen watching from behind a police barrica as at least three ambulances appeared to be transporting the victims to hospitals in one amateur footage that was shared on social media.

Social media users' reactions to the attack were conflicted. Some people praised the attack in Alexandria, while others decried the killing of tourists who were in Egypt.

Famous Egyptian author and TV broadcaster Ibrahim Issa described the attack as a "terrorist crime" in a post on the social networking platform X, formerly known as Twitter. He added that "any attempt to justify it is a crime against humanity."

Human Rights Watch researcher Amr Magdi denounced the attack, saying on X that there was "absolutely no justification" for deliberately killing Israeli civilians in Egypt, Gaza, or anyplace else.

A prominent granite column from the Roman era known as Pompey's Pillar is located in the Serapeum of Alexandria, an ancient Greek sanctuary. The 33.85-meter column, which dates back to the third century and is the only historic structure in the city that is still intact in its original location, is a well-liked tourist destination.

As Israel defends itself from a sneak attack by the terrorist organisation Hamas from the Gaza Strip, the attack occurs.
