According to firefighters, the bus caught fire after launching itself off a bridge that connects the cities of Mestre and Marghera in northern Italy.

On social media, Mayor Luigi Brugnaro declared, "A huge tragedy struck our community this evening," adding that "numerous victims" were on board. "Apocalyptic scene, without words

Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy, sent her "profound condolences".

She stated in a statement, "I am in contact with mayor Luigi Brugnaro and (Transport) Matteo Salvini in order to follow the news of this tragedy.
 
More individuals were still trapped beneath the rubble, Brugnaro subsequently claimed in an interview with Rai News24 on Italian state television.

The number of fatalities is anticipated to rise while the rescue effort is still ongoing.
