Supplement consumption is the cause of renal damage, according to nephrologists.

Dr. Manda David-West, a physician with a practise in Port Harcourt, has stated that misuse of painkillers and dietary supplements are two key contributors to kidney illness.

David-West, the head of the nephrology division at the teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Port Harcourt, also pointed out that patients with diabetes and high blood pressure had a higher chance of developing kidney disease.

Speaking in light of International Kidney Day, David-West suggested that routine health checks be performed by everyone in order to detect kidney illness early.

She also exhorted people to drink more water, give up smoking, and consume less alcohol.

The annual World Kidney Day is observed on March 10.

This year's theme is "Kidney Health for Everyone."
