Only farming can meet the needs of the nation’s growing population-Obasanjo

According to Nigeria's former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the country's dependence on oil and gas to meet its food needs is no longer sustainable given the country's rising population.

Obasanjo revealed this over the weekend when the leaders of Mzough U Tiv (MUT), the most powerful sociocultural group in the Tiv territory of Benue State, paid him a thank-you visit at his OOPL Penthouse residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. State of Benue is where MUT is situated.

According to President Olusegun Obasanjo, "only farming and agribusiness can deal with the nation's expanding population."

He reaffirmed that farming and other forms of agricultural industry would be the only means, and not oil, to feed the people.

The former head of state urged the people of Tiv to put their attention on agriculture and emphasized that he had moved on from the arson that occurred on his property in Benue.

The socio-political organization named Obasanjo a "Great Warrior" of Tiv land, and he hopes to establish a company in Benue this year.

Iorbee Ihagh, the leader of the organization, had earlier in his remarks sought various things of Olusegun Obasanjo, one of which was to establish a fruit juice industry in the state of Benue.
