IBBU Requests That Lecturers Avoid The ASUU Strike and Announce a Return to Class

The administration of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, Niger State, gave its employees instructions on Tuesday to end the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike and return to work on September 5 for the second semester of the 2021–2022 academic year.

The decision to order both academic and non-academic personnel to resume work was made by the university's Governing Council during its 55th regular meeting held yesterday, according to a statement from the school's Deputy Registrar for Information, Alhaji Baba Akote.

He urged the students to pay attention to the special announcement in their own best interests.

However, Dr. Kudu Dangana, the ASUU chapter chairman, told our correspondent over the phone that they had not terminated the strike and would thus not comply with the order.

He said that the management had previously received the letter extending the strike and questioned the need for the release of a statement calling for a resume.

"Any student who resumes is either squandering his time and money or visiting the university. We haven't ended the strike, he declared.

The strike is still going on at the university, according to Adamu Isah, chapter chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC).

He claimed that the council had already established a committee to discuss the concerns with the unions and questioned why the management took so long to issue the order for the meeting to resume.
