A thrilling three-hole playoff gives Zalatoris his first PGA Tour victory.

At the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Will Zalatoris maintained his composure for a crucial par putt on the 72nd hole that forced a playoff.

He then defeated Sepp Straka in a thrilling three-hole match to win his first PGA Tour victory.

Zalatoris was one shot back at 11 under with Cameron Smith as Straka entered Sunday's final round at 12 under, one stroke behind leader J.J. Spaun.

The field thinned out, leaving Straka and Zalatoris at the top after Spaun imploded, shooting Sunday's worst round of 78, and Smith was assessed a two-stroke penalty prior to his round for an improper drop earlier in the competition.

With a must-make 10-footer on the final hole, Zalatoris continued to dispel his reputation as a bad putter and did so in the most crucial situations.

He finished the tournament at 15 under par, three strokes better than Straka, and the playoff was anything but dull.

Both players reached the green in regulation on the first playoff hole, the 18th, which was considered to be the hardest hole on the course.

Zalatoris had a significantly longer distance to travel, though neither were in true birdie range. However, he demonstrated why he was ranked first for lag putting this week by tapping in from a foot to move on to the second hole.

Zalatoris' tee shot on the 18th hole, which was being replayed, struck the cart path and appeared to give Straka the tournament, but Straka placed his tee shot so close to the water's edge that he decided to accept the penalty rather than attempting to hack one out with a foot in the water.

Due to the penalty stroke, Zalatoris was able to chip back out into the fairway and bring his approach to just over 10 feet, where he would sink another incredibly gutsy putt to force a third playoff hole.

Straka pulled off what would typically be a title-winning approach shot, taking an aggressive line and landing six feet from the hole.

When his tee shot on the par three 11th hole reached the rock wall on the edge of the water, Zalatoris would have felt the trophy slipping out of his hands after losing two playoff games this season.

Although he wasn't in the water, the shot was unplayable, so a par would have given Straka the victory. However, Straka then fell into the water.

Zalatoris made no errors, and his second attempt at his approach shot was flawless, giving him another seven-footer for the victory. The Austrian's subsequent shot sailed over the green and into the bunker.

Zalatoris' season earnings increased to nearly $9 million with his $2.7 million winner's check as a result of the triumph, keeping him from breaking the record for the player with the most prize money in a season without a victory.

The American team of Lucas Glover and Brian Harman tied for third place at 12 under, while the seven-man group, which also included Spain's Jon Rahm, England's Matt Fitzpatrick, and Australia's Adam Scott, tied for fifth place at 11 under.

Cameron Smith finished at nine under par with rising star Joo-hyung 'Tom' Kim, Viktor Hovland at eight under par, and Wyndham Clark sneaked into the next round of the playoffs with his seven under par effort, moving him up to precisely position 70 in the FedEx Cup standings after his two-stroke penalty.
