Wike is upset with Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), since Atiku chose Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Delta State, to be his running mate.

It was speculated that Atiku had disregarded the suggestions made by a committee that he had established in order to choose his running mate.

Wike, who finished in second place during the presidential primaries, was selected to be Atiku's running mate by a committee that was directed by Governor Samuel Ortom.
