As Johnson steps down as PM, conservative politicians eyes the biggest job in the world.

Six leaders of the Conservative Party are seen to be contenders for the top position in England after Boris Johnson, the British prime minister, announced his resignation on Thursday.

Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak, former Health Secretary Sajid Javid, former Defense Minister Ben Wallace, current Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, as well as other less prominent officials like Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt and former Health Minister Jeremy Hunt, are prominent Conservatives who are seen as contenders.

Only Attorney General Suella Braverman has proclaimed her intention to run for president; the others have not yet expressed an interest.

Johnson's resignation as Conservative Party leader sparked a search for a new prime minister.

According to CNN, Johnson's contentious term as prime minister came to an end on Thursday as a result of a historic party uprising over many ethics scandals that compelled him to step down.

For Johnson to eventually give up on his attempts to hold onto power, it needed the resignation of nearly 60 members of his government—roughly half the workforce.

The Prime Minister stated even then that he would serve as interim leader while the Conservative Party began the process of selecting a replacement.

He made his resignation public on Thursday while standing outside No. 10 Downing Street. He claimed that "no one in politics is remotely indispensable" and that he was "sad to be giving up the best job in the world."

He will continue in office as prime minister until a replacement is selected in a leadership election expected to take place in the upcoming weeks, according to the departing Conservative Party leaders.

The parliamentary Conservative Party has made it obvious that it wants a new leader and, consequently, a new prime minister.

The procedure for selecting that new leader should start right away," he continued, noting that the timetable will be revealed next week.

Before he abruptly resigned, Dominic Cummings, a former adviser, was the PM's main critic for the lack of direction and ideas in his cabinet.
