SOCIAL MEDIA: Nigeria's government has issued new guidelines for Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms.

New regulations for Internet platforms operating in Nigeria have been issued by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

They were included in a statement issued on Monday by NITDA spokesperson Hadiza Umar.

The new code, according to Umar, was created to "establish guidelines for participating on the digital ecosystem."

Internet platforms must "register with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and select a designated country representative to communicate with Nigerian authorities," according to the regulation.

It further stated that they must comply with all regulatory requirements and related tax duties imposed by Nigerian law on their operations.

Internet platforms must also "offer a thorough compliance framework to avoid publication of forbidden content and unethical behaviour on their platform," according to NITDA.

The new rules were "developed in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), as well as input from Interactive Computer Service Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Google, and Tik Tok, among others," according to the agency.

From June 2021 to January 2022, President Muhammadu Buhari's administration suspended Twitter.
