Reps react to Buhari's lawsuit against Congress being dismissed.

The Supreme Court's decision to dismiss President Muhammadu Buhari's lawsuit seeking to invalidate section 84 (12) of the Electoral Amendment Act 2022 was applauded by the House of Representatives on Friday.

Rep. Benjamin Kalu, the House's spokesperson, made the compliment in an interview with NAN in Abuja.

Earlier, the court had ruled that Buhari lacked the authority to direct the National Assembly to pass or amend a law, adding that this went against the separation of powers principle.

The court held that no provision of the constitution requires the President to provide the go-ahead before exercising legislative authority.

The Supreme Court's decision, according to Kalu, pleased the House of Representatives, but the House didn't anticipate anything less given that the judges were learned academics.

It is not a triumph for the House of Representatives, but rather for the growth of our democracy and the rule of law, he said, adding that the ruling was "unambiguously accepting and heart-warming."

Let's celebrate this success, he remarked, noting that the Electoral Act has contributed its share to the growth of democracy and that nation-building is a shared responsibility.
