Kogi police station under bomb attack, inspector killed.

One on-duty police officer was killed when gunmen bombed the Police Area Command headquarters in Eika-Ohizenyi, Okehi Local Government Area, Kogi State.

According to reports, the seven gunmen attacked the station outside of town at around 12:15 am on Friday, June 24.

According to reports, the assailants killed the police inspector Jibril, also known as "yellow," in an instant.

Mallam Momoh Abubakar, a local who also talked with Nigerian Tribune, claimed that the first bomb the assailants detonated inside the station caused a loud noise that roused many nearby inhabitants from their slumber, while the second explosion partially destroyed the station's structure.

He further stated that neither the community's residents nor security personnel interfered with the assailants' operations for more than two hours.

He said that during the intense bombardment, bullets pierced the windows of the Catholic church close to the police station and the important mosque for the Eika community.

Since the shooters were able to operate freely for more than two hours without any interruption, the resident used this means to make an appeal to security personnel to be proactive and respond immediately to this type of occurrence.

"The first assault on the station happened on Friday, and this second assault, which took place five years later, also happened on Friday. To our amazement, no one has been detained in connection with the assault.

"As I speak to you, the Eika village is gripped by severe terror and dread as residents have stayed inside out of concern about possible gunman attacks. Because the attack is getting too intense, we are pleading with the government to beep its searchlight in this vicinity, he said.

The deceased policeman's body has now been transported to the morgue at Obangede General Hospital.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Egbuka, visited the area to conduct an on-the-spot assessment, according to SP SP William Ovye Aya, a spokesperson for the State Police Command, who confirmed the occurrence in a statement on Friday.

He added that in order to restore order in the area, he has also authorised the deployment of extra operational assets, including members of the Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Unit, Quick Response Unit, and State Intelligence Bureau.

He said that the Commissioner of Police had given the Command the assurance that it was dedicated to cooperating with other security organisations and patriotic stakeholders to make the State a safe environment for all.
