N71.4m fraud landed Mama Boko Haram a five-year prison sentence.

A Borno high court has given Aisha Wakil, who is known as "Mama Boko Haram," five years in prison for fraud.

In September 2020, the Maiduguri zonal command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned Mama Boko Haram, Tahiru Daura, and Prince Shoyode on a two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N71,400,000.

Read one of the charges against them:

"That you, Aisha Alkali Wakil, Tahiru Saidu Daura, and Prince Lawal Shoyode, while working for Complete Care and Aid Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, as CEO, programme manager, and country director, respectively, in the year 2018 at Maiduguri, Borno state, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, with the intent to defraud, persuaded Saleh Ahmed Said of Shuad General Enterprises Ltd to give you 3,000

After they said they were not guilty, the prosecutor, Mukhtar Ahmed, brought in four witnesses and a number of documents that were accepted as evidence.

Justice Aisha Kumaliya ruled on the case on Tuesday, June 14. She said the prosecution proved the case against the defendant beyond a reasonable doubt.

The judge gave the defendants a sentence of five years in prison with no choice of a fine. The convicts were also told to pay N30,500,000 to the victim as compensation.

The judge said that the convicts would have to serve an extra 10 years in jail if they didn't pay the fine.
