JUST IN: APC PRIMARIES 2023: APC governors reject Lawan as a consensus candidate.

Those opposed to Lawan claimed that if the APC is to maintain control at the centre, it must obey zoning and enable Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, and others cleared by the Screening Committee to run.

Governors on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) platform rejected Senate President Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan as the consensus presidential candidate for 2023 on Monday.

At a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, the governors urged on a power shift, saying that disallowing rotation would be too risky for the APC.

Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the APC's National Chairman, has named Lawan as the party's consensus candidate, a move that has caused consternation among governors and other party stakeholders.

The declaration occurred only hours before the APC's National Convention, which was set to pick its flag bearer within the following three days.

Bendelnews has on good authority that some members of the APC's National Working Committee, which was chaired over by Senator Abdullahi Adamu, were adamantly opposed to Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan as a consensus candidate.

Those opposed to Lawan claimed that if the APC is to maintain control at the centre, it must obey zoning and enable Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, and others cleared by the Screening Committee to run.

Barr Simon Lalong, the Chairman of the Northern Governors' Forum and the current Governor of Plateau State, made his opinion known earlier in his briefing with State House media following his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.
