An expired industrial gas cylinder is suspected of releasing poisonous chemicals into the air, which then spread over the neighbourhood of Mundadu in Kano's suburb of Kano, leading to the hospitalisation of approximately one hundred twenty people.
According to a source who spoke with DAILY POST, the incident took place on Friday evening when one Saifullahi was gathering scrap metals and crushing them in order to recycle them.
"I was notified this evening that there was an issue where Saifullahi Muhammad performs his scrap metal collection business," said Magaji Abdullahi, the ward head of the area, while verifying the occurrence and stating that there was a problem at the location.
Saminu Abdullahi, the public relations officer for the Kano State Fire Service, confirmed the incident and explained that many victims were transported to hospitals for medical treatment as a result of the various degrees of injuries they sustained. He said this while also confirming that the incident had occurred.
According to him, approximately 70 of them were taken to Jaen Primary Healthcare and another 50 of them were taken to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital for treatment. He also mentioned that as of right now, there has not been a single fatality associated with the incident.
He went on to explain that the majority of those who had been killed were women and children.
