Breaking: Ekiti Decide: Vote Buying Sells For N500 Per Vote.

Mr. Paul James, an election observer from YIAGA in Ekiti State, claims that people sold their votes for as little as N500 during Saturday's governorship election.

Money and other stuff were provided to people during political events from March 2022 to the present, James told the BBC Hausa Service on Saturday.

It has suddenly changed, he claims, because they now travel from house to house, handing out money.

"What this has demonstrated is that politicians don't like wasting time campaigning; instead, they now buy people's votes," James stated.

The election observer stated that this is not limited to just one political party, and that it is so discouraging that they "buy people's votes for as little as N500."

However, an INEC official, Hajiya Zainab Aminu, told the BBC Hausa that the matter had been addressed.

When individuals come to vote at polling stations, Aminu says they are not allowed to use their phones or take pictures.

People used to take pictures of what they voted for and then exhibit it to get money, according to her.

She went on to say that the Commission was collaborating with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to capture those who broke election rules and punish them appropriately.

Vote-buying has been reported in numerous polling centres in Ekiti's ongoing governorship race, according to the DAILY POST.

Concerned voters claimed that on Saturday, some people suspected to be working for politicians showed up at various polling centres offering money to those already in line, with the objective of enticing them with cash.

They said, however, that such offers were no longer made in the open, as they formerly were, ostensibly to avoid the attention of on-duty security officers, as a prospective voter would just be quietly invited to a corner, a little distance away from the voting unit, to collect money.
