The Federal Economic Executive Council has selected and approved a seedling sample to be planted by farmers in the 36 states of the country to boost groundnut farming for exports.
At a press conference in Gusau, Zamfara State, the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC) stated that it was committed to increasing agricultural production as an alternative source of revenue to the national purse.
At a one-day workshop for groundnut farmers in Maru, Zamfara, the NEPC Adviser in Gusau, Yusuf Isma'il Idris, said the move is to ensure that Nigerian crops meet international standards.
Farmers will be taught modern groundnut farming techniques, he said, so the crop can be used as an alternative to oil export.
According to Idris, the federal government has designated one farm product for each of Nigeria's 36 states, ensuring uniformity in farm production and value chain development for export.
