Russia-Ukraine War: Americans in Russia are asked to leave immediately

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Monday, February 28, 2022, the United States advised Americans living in Russia to leave the country immediately.

The United States Department of State stated on Monday that US citizens in Russia should consider leaving the country as soon as possible using commercial options that are still available.

As international sanctions bite deeper into Russia's economy, the department warns that options for escaping the country are becoming increasingly limited.

Many countries have prohibited Russian airlines from flying through their airspace. "The ability of the United States government to provide routing or emergency services to United States citizens in Russia is severely limited," according to the statement.

The department stated that non-emergency staff members and their families at the US Embassy in Moscow (Russia) have been given permission to leave the country immediately following an announcement earlier in the day.
