Russia-Ukraine: Chelsea is handed over by Roman Abramovich.

Roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea, has donated the club to a charitable organisation.

On Saturday, Abramovich announced this in a statement.

This is in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to go to war with Ukraine's neighbour.

As part of its sanctions against Russia, the European Union (EU) is seizing assets belonging to Russians and the Russian government.

There have been calls for Chelsea to be taken away from Abramovich, and the billionaire businessman handed the club over to Chelsea's Charitable Foundation on Saturday, saying he believes they are the best people to look after it.

His statement reads as follows:

"Throughout my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is to ensure that we are as successful as we can be today, while also building for the future and playing a positive role in our communities."

"I have always made decisions in the best interests of the Club." These are the values to which I am still dedicated. That is why I am entrusting Chelsea FC's stewardship and care to the trustees of Chelsea's charitable Foundation today.

"I believe they are currently in the best position to protect the Club's, players', staff's, and fans' interests.
