Sia has said that she thought about ending her own life after her movie, called "Music," got a lot of bad reviews.
The singer told the New York Times that after the movie came out, she "was suicidal and relapsed and went to rehab."
The film "Music" was Sia's first directorial project. When it came out, she was criticised for casting dancer Maddie Ziegler as an autistic teen in the film.
It seemed like a bad idea to hire Ziegler, who is neurotypical (not autistic) and didn't have any acting experience. There are a lot of neuroatypical (autistic) actresses out there.
Sia was accused of being "ableist" and making "harmful stereotypes about people with autism."
Not only did Sia get called out for how the movie portrayed autism in general but also the use of restraints in it.
Sia, 46, was talking to the New York Times about Kathy Griffin when she said Griffin, 61, helped her get over the backlash.
Said: "She saved my life.
Afterwards, Sia said the comedian had persuaded her to go out to a Hollywood restaurant to eat, which she did.
Sia's strategic outing was caught by paparazzi and helped her get more attention.
Although some people didn't like the movies, they were nominated for two Golden Globes.
"Music in no way supports or encourages the use of restraints on people with autism." Sia said that a disclaimer would be put in front of the film reading.
Also, there are occupational therapists who specialise in sensory processing that can be consulted about safe ways of giving proprioceptive, deep-pressure feedback to help keep meltdowns from getting out of hand.
In Sia's speech, she said that the project was a work of love.
Sia told 10 News First: "The character is based on my friend who has a brain disorder." "He didn't like not being able to talk, and I made this movie with nothing but love for him and his mother."
