The conduct of three teenage guys caught on Saturday burning the head of a female reported to be in a relationship with one of them for money ceremony in the Oke Aregba district of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, elicited outrage and indignation.
The adolescents' heinous actions were branded as "despicable and heartless" by several Nigerians on social media.
Others bemoaned the problem of ritual killings, which they say are done primarily by teenagers enslaved by the get-rich-quick mentality.
The three adolescents were arrested in the early hours of Saturday by the Ogun State Police Command, according to The Nation, after a tip from a community security officer named Segun Adewusi.
Wariz Oladehinde, 17, Abdulgafar Lukman, 19, and Mustakeem Balogun, 20, were the teenagers who strangled the girl simply named as Rofiat.
Four boys were burning something presumed to be a human head in a neighbourhood pot, according to the security guard.
One of the suspects led police operatives to the building where Rofiat's dismembered body was discovered, along with the short cutlass and a knife used in cutting off her head, according to the now-viral confessional video viewed by The Nation.
The three lads have been detained, according to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the event in a statement.
"Three young lads whose ages vary between 17 and 20 years were detained by men of the Ogun State Police Command in the early hours of Saturday 29th of January 2022 for killing a girlfriend of their friend for money making ritual," Oyeyemi added.
"During questioning, the captured culprits admitted that what they were burning in the neighbourhood pot was the head of their fugitive accomplice's girlfriend."
"They also admitted that the girl, simply identified as Rofiat, was brought to where she was murdered by four of them, after which they cut off her head and packed the remains in a sack and discarded it in an old building by her lover, simply identified as Soliu."
"They then took police officers to the building, where the dismembered body was discovered and lodged for autopsy at the main hospital mortuary."
"A small cutlass and a knife used to sever the deceased's head were also found.
