Nigeria:Uche Nwosu, Okorocha's son-in-law, says police never invited him before hauling him away from church.

Uche Nwosu, the son-in-law of a former governor of Imo State, was released less than 24 hours after masked police operatives kidnapped him at a church service in his village of Eziama Obieri in the Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State.

In a statement released on Monday by his media aide, Chikezie Nwadike, Nwosu stated that he did not spend the night in police custody.

The letter also disputed the theory that Nwosu was detained in a church because he had repeatedly declined to accept police invites.

The statement urged the police, as well as anyone who had the same opinion, to present recorded proof that Nwosu, a 2019 governorship contender, was invited by the police.

Nwosu stated that he was "well" and expressed gratitude to Nigerians who stood up for him while his safety was unknown.

"This is to inform the general public, friends and well-wishers, supporters and sympathisers that Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, who was abducted by security agencies while attending a church service at St Peter's Anglican Church Umunwokwe Village Eziama-Obaire Nkwerre LGA, has regained his freedom and has been unconditionally released," the statement reads. He was never kept in their care for more than a night because every effort was made to get him out.

"Recall the heinous episode that occurred at St Peter's Anglican Church yesterday, December 26th, 2021, when security operatives grabbed him inside the church during the outing ceremony of his mother's funeral and carried him away amid occasional gunfire and harassment of the congregation?"

"While we await a police report on the reasons for the kidnapping and arrest, we urge everyone to be calm and focused because God is in care of the issue," the message continued.

“Ugwumba Uche Nwosu is a gentleman who has shown great respect for established authorities and has never engaged in civil disobedience. There was never an invitation, and if somebody claims otherwise, let them provide proof."
