Even though I signed the budget, I did so reluctantly-President Buhari.

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari, at least based on his statements, was not quite delighted at an event that should have been a cause for celebration.

Mr Buhari's signing of Nigeria's 2022 budget, which his government believes would help tackle some of the country's many challenges, took place on Friday at the State House in Abuja.

Mr Buhari, despite signing the budget, made it plain that he did so grudgingly.

One of his main complaints was that the 469 members of Nigeria's Senate and House of Representatives put over 6,000 "additional projects" into the budget he submitted in October.

Mr Buhari noted in his remarks at the ceremony that "provisions for as many as 10,733 projects were cut while 6,576 new projects were put into the budget by the National Assembly," according to a statement given to PREMIUM TIMES by his office.

That indicates that on average, each legislator added 14 projects to the law governing Nigeria's revenue and expenditure in 2022.

"Most of the projects added relate to topics that are primarily the duties of State and Local Governments, and do not appear to have been adequately thought, constructed, and costed," Mr Buhari said, adding that lawmakers made "worrisome amendments" to the budget.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan and Speaker of the House Femi Gbajabiamila were both present at the budget signing ceremony.

In the past, lawmakers have claimed that they have the constitutional authority to make such changes.
