Manchester United has fired manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to reports.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been fired as Manchester United manager following a "embarrassing" 4-1 defeat at the hands of Watford on Sunday.

Solskjaer signed a new three-year contract with the club in July, but he is leaving after overseeing five defeats in their last seven Premier League games - a run that has left them 12 points behind league leaders Chelsea. Solskjaer will be missed.

Old Trafford officials have resisted calls to remove Solskjaer from his position following a humiliating 5-0 loss to rivals Liverpool in early November, as well as a 2-0 derby defeat to Manchester City in the following week.

Following the catastrophic defeat at Vicarage Road, United executives met on Saturday evening to consider his future, and the club announced his dismissal the following day.

United have confirmed that Solskjaer's assistant Michael Carrick will take over as interim manager until the end of the season. The club are looking to appoint an interim manager until the end of the current campaign.

"Ole will always be remembered as a legend at Manchester United, and it is with great regret that we have come to this tough decision," the club said. While the previous few weeks have been frustrating, they should not overshadow the work he has done over the past three years to re-establish the foundations for success in the long run.
