Any student caught indecently dressing has been threatened with rustication at Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State.

In a circular obtained by SaharaReporters, the school's administration issued a stern warning.

Anyone who fails to comply with the directive for a semester will be rusticated from the school, according to a circular dated September 7, 2021.

The registrar of the school, Olugbenga Arajulu, signed the circular with the reference number AD/ REG/CIR/58/VOL. VI/309.

“It would be to inform you that the Senate observed and frowned upon (sic) the high rate of indecent dressing among the students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, at its 171st Regular Meeting on Wednesday, 25th August 2021.

“For the sake of clarity, indecent dressing includes, but is not limited to, the following: female students wearing skimpy skirts and blouses; female students leaving their cleavages open; and male students wearing braids or dreadlocks, earrings, nose rings, tattered jeans, sagging, and so on.

“Upon careful consideration, the Senate, in its wisdom, has decided that the penalty for indecent dressing will now be rustication for one semester, effective August 25, 2021.

University, Akungba-Akoko student who violates the above Senate decision on indecent dressing is deemed to have committed a misconduct and will be sanctioned accordingly.”

Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist, reacted by accusing the institution's Senate of becoming a "Fashion Police Force."

“This bizarre, backward, and belligerently insane memo emanated from a Nigerian university, to be precise, this nonsense was released from Adekunle Ajasin University in ONDO state,” he wrote on Facebook.,

Ondo is known for producing some of Nigeria's brightest minds, and now the university's Senate must have recently appointed a ‘Hisbah' commander as its Vice Chancellor, leaving the university with no choice but to turn its Senate into a Fashion Police force.”
