The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and its Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, for their role in an international operation targeting online sextortion networks accused of exploiting minors.
The commendation followed the EFCC’s support for Operation Artemis, a joint law enforcement initiative aimed at disrupting financially motivated sextortion schemes targeting children and teenagers.
According to a letter signed by FBI Director Kash Patel, the Nigerian anti-graft agency played a key role in investigations that led to the arrest and extradition of two suspects to the United States to face federal charges.
Patel praised Olukoyede’s leadership and the EFCC’s cooperation, noting that the commission assigned personnel to support the investigations and facilitate the suspects’ transfer to the United States for prosecution.
FBI Names Two Nigerians Extradited to US
The FBI specifically recognised the EFCC’s role in apprehending Adebola Festus Adekunle and Mudashiru Afeez Olawale, who were indicted in the United States in 2023 over allegations involving the sexual exploitation and extortion of minors.
The two men were extradited to the United States in August 2026 following investigations and extradition proceedings facilitated by the EFCC.
They are facing federal charges connected to separate sextortion schemes targeting male minors in the US.
Investigators reportedly linked the cases to two teenage victims who died by suicide after allegedly experiencing online sexual exploitation and extortion.
The allegations remain matters for the US judicial process.
What FBI Director Kash Patel Said About EFCC
In his letter to Olukoyede, Patel described the commission as a vital partner in Operation Artemis, which focuses on disrupting financially motivated sextortion networks targeting young people.
He said the successful handling of the cases would not have been possible without the EFCC’s assistance and commitment to international law enforcement cooperation.
The FBI director also expressed appreciation to the commission for its dedication to justice and its continued support for cross-border investigations.
Patel said he looked forward to strengthening the partnership between the FBI and the EFCC in tackling cybercrime and other forms of criminal activity.
Why the Operation Matters to Nigeria
The commendation highlights the importance of cooperation between Nigerian and international law enforcement agencies in investigating cybercrime that crosses national borders.
Online sextortion typically involves threatening victims with the release of intimate images or other sensitive material unless they meet demands for money, additional images or other forms of compliance.
Children and teenagers can be particularly vulnerable to such schemes, which may cause serious psychological harm.
The FBI’s recognition of the EFCC also underscores Nigeria’s role in international efforts to investigate suspects accused of exploiting minors online and bring them before the courts.
The partnership between both agencies is expected to remain important as authorities continue efforts to disrupt cybercrime networks and pursue those suspected of targeting vulnerable victims.
