Men Are in Love, Women Are in Business: Billionaire’s Wife Demands $6.2 Billion as Divorce Battle Turns Ugly

What you need to know

A major divorce battle involving billionaire hedge fund manager John Overdeck has opened in a Newark courtroom, with his wife, Laura Overdeck, seeking a settlement reportedly worth about $6.2 billion.

Laura is asking for 35% of John’s stake in Two Sigma Investments, which her lawyers value at roughly $6.2 billion. She is also seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in bonds and equal control of the couple’s family foundation.

According to Laura’s legal team, John offered her about $633 million, which they described as an attempt to minimize the amount she would receive.

John’s lawyer disputed that figure, saying his client offered a $723 million tax-free equitable settlement.

At the centre of the trial is a major question: Should John Overdeck’s stake in Two Sigma be treated as marital property?

John’s lawyers argue that the hedge fund was founded in 2001, two years before the couple married in 2002. They maintain that the company was already an established business before the marriage.

Laura’s lawyers have taken a different position. They argue that Two Sigma had little tangible value when the couple married and that its substantial growth during their marriage makes her entitled to a share of the company.

The couple reportedly married without a prenuptial agreement, while their divorce proceedings began in 2022.

The case has attracted significant attention and has been described as the biggest contested divorce in New Jersey history.

John, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes at about $8 billion, co-founded Two Sigma with David Siegel. The two men reportedly own roughly half of the company each and have also been involved in a high-profile power struggle over the firm.

Laura is also a former hedge fund professional and founded the Bedtime Math nonprofit in 2012. Separately, she is suing John’s former estate law firm, Seward & Kissel, accusing the firm of helping her husband shield assets.

The high-value divorce has generated widespread reactions online, with social media users divided over Laura’s reported $6.2 billion demand.
