Tinubu Accepts Egbetokun’s Resignation, Appoints Tunji Disu as Acting IGP
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following a letter in which he cited pressing family considerations.
In an official statement dated February 24, 2026, the President expressed gratitude to Egbetokun for his decades of distinguished service to the nation and the Nigeria Police Force. He praised the outgoing police chief’s dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture.
To ensure continuity in leadership amid ongoing security challenges, Tinubu approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
The President said he is confident that Disu’s experience, operational depth, and leadership capacity will provide steady direction for the Force at this critical time.
In line with the Police Act 2020, Tinubu disclosed that he will convene the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police before forwarding his name to the Senate for confirmation.
The administration reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening national security and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
