An explosion has rocked a mosque within Gamboru Market in Maiduguri, Borno State, leaving at least five people dead and dozens injured.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 24, 2025, at about 6:00 p.m., during evening prayers at Al-Adum Juma’at Mosque.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the blast in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to the police, the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED).
Five worshippers were confirmed killed in the attack, while 35 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Security operatives immediately cordoned off the affected area to prevent further harm and to enable emergency responders to operate effectively.
Rescue operations were launched under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid psc.
The operation involved joint efforts with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and other security and emergency response bodies.
The injured victims were evacuated to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri for medical attention.
Preliminary findings suggest the explosion may have been a suicide attack.
Police said fragments believed to be from a suicide vest were recovered at the scene, alongside eyewitness accounts supporting the claim.
Investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the explosion.
Meanwhile, the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit continues to conduct sweeping operations in and around the area to rule out the presence of secondary devices.
Authorities have assured residents that normalcy has been restored.
Members of the public have been advised to remain calm, avoid the affected area, and continue to cooperate with security agencies.
