A Magistrate Court in Kano State has sentenced popular TikTok content creator, Mai Wushirya, to jail for sharing an indecent video on social media, which authorities say violates public morality and decency laws.
The court, found Wushirya guilty of circulating a sexually suggestive video on TikTok, an act that the prosecution described as “immoral and capable of corrupting public morals.”
Delivering judgment on Monday, The magistrate court sentenced the social media influencer to a term of imprisonment, emphasizing the need to curb the growing trend of obscene online content. The court stated that the sentence should serve as a deterrent to others who use digital platforms irresponsibly.
In addition, the magistrate issued an arrest warrant for Wushirya’s female partner who appeared alongside him in the viral video but has since gone into hiding. Law enforcement authorities have been directed to ensure her immediate arrest and prosecution.
During the proceedings, the prosecution presented evidence linking the TikToker to the explicit material, which had gained widespread attention online and attracted public condemnation. Wushirya reportedly pleaded for leniency, admitting to recording and uploading the video, but claimed it was not intended to offend public sensibilities.
The court, however, ruled that ignorance of the law is not an excuse and maintained that individuals must take responsibility for the content they produce and share online.
Kano State has recently intensified its clampdown on social media users found guilty of spreading indecent or immoral content, in line with the state’s strict stance on public morality under Sharia-influenced laws.
Authorities have warned content creators and influencers to adhere to community standards and avoid acts that promote obscenity or contradict cultural and religious values.
