Iranian authorities on Wednesday, September 17, carried out the execution of a man convicted of espionage for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, according to the country’s judiciary.
The judiciary’s official news outlet, Mizan Online, identified the man as Babak Shahbazi, stating he was hanged after the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence.
Although the timing of his arrest was not disclosed, officials said Shahbazi was convicted of the capital crimes of “corruption on earth” and “waging war against God.”
Mizan reported that Shahbazi, who worked on designing and installing industrial cooling systems, had access to companies tied to Iran’s military, security, and telecommunications sectors. Authorities alleged he passed sensitive information to Mossad in exchange for money and residency abroad.
The execution comes amid heightened tensions following Iran’s June war with Israel, after which Tehran vowed severe punishment for those accused of aiding its regional rival.
Just last month, Iranian authorities executed Roozbeh Vadi, an employee of a subsidiary of the Atomic Energy Organisation, for allegedly supplying Mossad with intelligence on nuclear scientists
