Barcelona sporting director Deco has denied claims that the club actively pursued Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, insisting that it was the player’s agent who initiated contact with the Catalan side.
Speaking in an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Deco set the record straight amid ongoing speculation linking Williams with a move to Camp Nou.
“We never chased Nico Williams. It was his agent who approached us multiple times, not us going after him,” Deco stated.
The former Portuguese international added that Williams did not fit the exact profile Barcelona were targeting in the transfer market.
“Athletic Club should ask his agent. He wasn’t even exactly the profile we were looking for… you just have to listen,” he emphasized.
Nico Williams, who has been one of Athletic Club’s standout players in recent seasons, has attracted interest from several top European clubs. However, Deco’s remarks suggest Barcelona are distancing themselves from the rumors, while reiterating that their recruitment strategy is focused on other options.
